At 8,125 meters, Nanga Parbat is the ninth-highest mountain in the world and the westernmost of all eight-thousanders. However, its mass significantly exceeds that of all other eight-thousanders due to its unique topography. On no other eight-thousander do meadows and forests extend as close to the base of the mountain as on Nanga Parbat. Its south face, the Rupal flank, is the highest wall in the world, with a 4,500-meter drop in elevation above the valley floor. The relief vividly depicts the immense dimensions of this mountain. The 1:50,000 relief deliberately includes large parts of the surrounding area of Nanga Parbat. The topography of the complex eight-thousander is thus completely depicted, achieving a representative overall size.
